Association Domino is a non-governmental, non-partisan, non-profit organization based in Zagreb. Its aim is to question traditional norms and work towards the transformation of oppressive norms in transitional society through culture, media, public policies, education, and collaboration with domestic and international organizations. Founded in 2003 by Zvonimir Dobrović, curator and arts manager. Employees: 5 Number of programs per year: 80 – 100 (theater / dance and live art performances, film screenings, artistic residencies, educations / workshops / trainings, book promotions, exhibitions…)
Four clusters of programs:
1. Organization and promotion of cultural events.
Queer Zagreb Season
Encouraging domestic and international production of queer art and activism to enhance the visibility and capacity of the queer community for creative, activist, and public engagement with the goal of creating safe private and public spaces for queer individuals.
Perforations festival
Support for local and Eastern European artists working in contemporary performance during both production (research and creative process) and post-production (documentation and dissemination) to improve their working conditions and competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
Sounded Bodies festival
Strengthening the local contemporary dance scene through commissions of new work by local artists as well as by presenting international dance companies in Croatia. Additionally, educating local dance artists by organizing masterclass workshops to enhance the quality of domestic dance practices.
Book publishing
For 20 years Domino has been publishing books on LGBTIQ topics, which still remain rare on the shelves of Croatian bookstores. Among the noteworthy titles are the four volumes of Michel Foucault’s “History of Sexuality,” two volumes of diaries by Susan Sontag, a complete set of books by Hervé Guibert, the research publication “History of Homosexuality in Croatia,” the award-winning novel “Bad Girls” by Camila Sosa Villada, and about 40 others. By actively supporting the translation and publishing of works that are important for the Croatian LGBTQI+ community and the broader public, we contribute to the cultural and publishing diversity of the Croatian literary scene. In 2023, we continue to focus our publishing towards Latin American queer literature which has not been translated into Croatian at all.
Visual arts
We present several exhibitions / visual arts programs per year. One of the major is “The Traces of Others” project that we are conducting in 2023 and 2024. It is a project aimed at developing and incorporating LGBTQI+ identities and experiences into guided museum tour programs. This project involves several months of participation from local museum advisors and/or curators in an educational collaboration program between Domino Association and experts from The British Museum in London. The focus of this collaboration is on the inclusion of non-dominant identities and practices in museum exhibits and programs.
Another project that is ongoing and quite interesting is „History of Political Performance in Croatia“. We are editing, documenting and digitizing archives of live art performances from the 1960s till today not only because somehow it has not been done, but because we hope our database could be the entry point for anyong with an interest in the performance art history and development in this region with a very strong line of artists in the field.
2. International cooperation
Internationalizaton is a significant aspect of our work, through which we present local artists in an international context. We have established long-term collaborations with partners from Naples, New York, and Buenos Aires, where we regularly showcase some of our programs each year. Throughout the year, more than 20 artists from Croatia participate in foreign residencies and engagements in these and other cities across Europe and the world through us. Another aspect is participation in EU networks and funding programs which gives us an opportunity to be in touch with new developments in the field of contemporary performance.
3. Advocacy and policy
Enhance the transparency and efficiency of the funding system for non-governmental organizations and their programs, participate in the creation of public policies in the following areas: cultural strategies and addressing current issues in artistic production and activities; ecology within the broader societal context; LGBTIQ+ rights, gender and women’s rights with keeping an open eye to new issues that arise in the meantime
4. Education
Organizing informal educational opportunities through several strands: summers school of arts and activism, regular masterclasses on a whole range of topcis – from art practices to arts management, peer to peer sessions, and any other format that can suit the content.
