Trails of Others
The Domino Association and The British Museum from London are developing a queer readings program through Croatian museums exhibitions and holdings.
Domino with its project partner the Zagreb City Museum implements the project “Trails of Others” in cooperation with the British Museum from London on the inclusion of queer history in museum displays. The project aims to explore examples of good practices on the topic of LGBTQ+ histories inclusiveness in museum programs and displays, following the British Museums “Desire, love and identity” collection.
During the field trip to London, representatives of the Domino Association and the Zagreb City Museum, together with representatives of The British Museum, examined models for creating a similar curatorial project in Croatia.
The “Trails of Others” project includes several trainings for curators in Croatia and a set of activities involving local communities in the creation of an online map through the museum’s permanent exhibitions (and holdings), which would focus on those works that have a connection with queer culture and art. Given that LGBTQ+ history in Croatia is largely invisible in museum permanent displays and/or collections, the project seeks to set the conditions to launching LGBTQ+ collections in Croatian museums, as well as encouraging research and new readings of already existing museum collections.
The Domino association has been successfully cooperating with The British Museum since 2017, when the exhibition “Erotics and dreams of the Edo period” was being prepared, which for the first time in Croatia exhibited about 200 shungi, Japanese erotic drawings from the Edo period. This cooperation continued with the online education program for local curators in Croatia, held by experts from the British Museum, Stuart Frost and Kayte McSweeney. The project of exploring museum holdings and exhibitions through a queer prism is a continuation of this valuable collaboration.
The project is co-financed by the City of Zagreb. The annual program of the Domino Association is supported by the Kultura Nova Foundation
