While we are increasingly forced into silence, submission, and distancing, imposing norms that subordinate us to the power of the oppressors, we choose touch. On Zagreb’s main square, where the forces of power have met and clashed for generations, where politicians, athletes, entertainers, believers and tourists take turns on stage, we bring an affective intervention. We put sensation and touch at the forefront \u2013 as a feminist act of rebellion, resistance and intimacy. <\/span><\/p>\n

Our lives are shaped by numerous asymmetries \u2013 gender, class, race, status \u2013 that forcefully determine our place. At home, on the street, in the family, at work, in society. From this space, through tactile and sensory mobilization, we today choose to embody defiance and pleasure. We are not here to suffer. We are not here to disappear. <\/p>\n

We are here to hear each other, to absorb, to caress.<\/p>\n

On April 6th, we won’t be cooking lunches, dusting, or taking our grandchildren for walks \u2013 even though it’s<\/span> stone cold and the devil has come for his own.<\/p>\n

The performance Milovanje<\/span> by Selma Banich and Nikolina Butorac was<\/span> premiered as part of the performance program of the Visible project, curated by Ana \u0160kegro (MSU, Zagreb). The inter-institutional project and exhibition Visible was<\/span> created in collaboration with the MSU Zagreb, MMSU Rijeka, the Dubrovnik Art Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts Osijek and the Split Art Gallery. <\/p>\n

The performance Caress<\/span> in Zagreb is realized with the support of the Domino association. Nikolina Butorac<\/strong> (1986, Zagreb) graduated<\/span> in 2012 from the Department of Animated Film and New Media, majoring in New Media, under the mentorship of Prof. Andreja Kulun\u010di\u0107. <\/div>\n
Since 2010, she has participated in numerous group exhibitions and festivals, as well as in performative projects and art workshops. Using elements of engaged art, she creates oases of equal interactions, in which differences complement and enrich us. It is<\/span> important for her to include a selected, but also a random audience, to explore the boundaries of the individual and the collective, the physical and the ephemeral, the mobile and the fixed. 2015. goes on a residential stay in Finland, where he works on a socially engaged project, an installation of plants in the public space of the city of Rauma. 2021. participates in a group exhibition in the gallery Myy\u00e4l\u00e42, in Helsinki, on the occasion of the Relational Art Week event, with the video work: Probability of Effort\/The Probability of Effort. 2022-2024. collaborates with artist Gail Hocking (Australia), and exhibits joint work; Erosion of Future Memories, in Adelaide, FeltSpace Gallery. 2024. receives funding from the Gwaertler grant foundation, for a multimedia, socially engaged research project on mental health among young people “Moving Horizons; Mental state of time”. <\/div>\n

Selma Banich<\/strong> (1979, SFRY) is<\/span> an artist, activist, community organizer and practitioner of expressive art therapy from Zagreb.<\/div>\n
Her artistic practice is<\/span> grounded in processual, investigative and activist work, and is<\/span> politically inspired by anarchism and feminism. She works independently and in collaboration with other artists, curators, communities and initiatives in the Balkans, Europe and the USA. Deeply committed to feminist, anti-fascist, migrant and workers’ struggles, she actively participates in local and transnational solidarity initiatives, including Zagreb City of Refuge, Solidarityline Balkans and Za KRUH. <\/div>\n
