From Zagreb to New York, a journey that has been going on for fifteen years: from October<\/strong> 1<\/strong> to 11,<\/strong> the Croatian association Domino<\/strong> presents the new edition of the Queer New York International Arts Festival<\/strong> in the iconic New York La MaMi<\/strong> . The program includes three productions connected to the Croatian independent performance scene, and the first four performances have already been performed in front of an enthusiastic audience.<\/p>\n

This year’s Queer New York is not just another guest appearance by Croatian artists in the US, but a continuation of one of the longer-running international stories of Croatian independent culture. Domino has been developing its collaboration with New York since 2011, when it presented artists from Croatia and the region at La MaMa through the Perforation festival.<\/p>\n

A year later, the Queer New York International Arts Festival was launched, the first edition of which was held in 2012 at a dozen locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, while in 2013 the festival collaborated with La MaMo. The festival was launched in 2012 by Zvonimir Dobrovi\u0107 and Andr\u00e9 von Ah, and was born from the experience of Queer Zagreb and the idea that queer in art does not only denote sexual or gender identity, but a broader space for questioning social and artistic norms. Domino’s New York and American programs have presented a large number of Croatian artists and collectives over the years, including Ivica Buljan, BADco., Room 100, Oliver Frlji\u0107, \u017deljko Zorica, Branko Brezovec, Petra Kova\u010di\u0107, Alen and Nenad Sinkauz, Bruno Isakovi\u0107, Studio for Contemporary Dance and others.<\/strong> Only from Croatia has passed through Domino’s programs in the USA more than 40 artists<\/strong>, while the number of international participants approached a hundred. Over the years, the programs have been covered by both American and international media, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and the Financial Times.<\/p>\n

An important new stage took place in 2024, when Queer New York returned after a six-year hiatus with a big edition at NYU Skirball. The festival brought together thirty artists from Croatia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Germany, and in addition to the performances and exhibitions there were talks, programs for New York University students and lectures at the Tisch School of the Arts. At that time, the Croatian program was represented by, among others, Bruno Isakovi\u0107, Nata\u0161a Rajkovi\u0107, Mia Zalukar and Arijana Leki\u0107-Fridrih<\/strong> , and The New York Times published a review of the play “Kill B.”<\/p>\n

Two years later, the festival returns to where much of Domino’s New York story began \u2013 at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in the East Village, one of the historically key institutions of American experimental theatre.<\/p>\n

La MaMa celebrates its 65th season this year, and Queer New York is officially part of its program from October 1 to 11, under the curatorial leadership of Zvonimir Dobrovi\u0107. At the center of this year’s program are three works that talk about the body, identity, relationships and the possibility of change from different perspectives: ” All My Bodies<\/strong> ” by Gonzalo Quintana and Maiamar Abrodos, ” Only Under<\/strong> ” by Bruna Isakovi\u0107 and Ana Mrak and ” Once Upon Tomorrow<\/strong> ” by Aleksandra Janeva Imfeld, performed by Bruna Isakovi\u0107 and Mia Zalukar.<\/p>\n

The play by Argentine director Gonzalo Quintana<\/strong> and actress Maiamar Abrodos<\/strong> begins as a lecture on scenographic perspective and the body in theatrical space, gradually transforming into an intimate autobiographical journey through different bodies and identities. Through personal archives, memories, humor and music, Abrodos speaks about art, transition and her own life experience as a trans woman in Argentina.<\/p>\n

The program continues on October 8th and 9th with the play “Only Under” by Bruno Isakovi\u0107<\/strong> and Ana Mrak<\/strong> . Through choreography, the play explores the invisible physical, emotional and social forces that shape relationships between people. The body becomes a place of closeness, pressure and hierarchy, but at the same time a space of resistance and transformation.<\/p>\n

The finale of the program on October 10 and 11 is “Once upon a time tomorrow” by Aleksandra Janeva Imfeld<\/strong> . In the performance by Bruna Isakovi\u0107<\/strong> and Mia Zalukar,<\/strong> two people travel towards some uncertain tomorrow, while their relationship is constantly changing. Are they a couple, brother and sister, old friends or just strangers brought together by chance? Through silences, touches, memories and cracks in time, the play opens a space between past and future, closeness and distance, real and imagined.<\/p>\n

The three performances connect the body as a site of personal, social, and political experience \u2013 from trans autobiography and the right to self-determination, through power relations between bodies, to questions of memory, intimacy, and identity. This is precisely the idea on which Queer New York is built: queer as an artistic space that is not defined by a single aesthetic or identity, but by that which remains outside the norm and which changes depending on the social, political, and geographical context.<\/p>\n

What is particularly interesting for Croatian culture is that behind this program is an organization that grew out of the Zagreb independent scene. Domino, which has organized Queer Zagreb since 2003 and Perforations since 2009, has not remained just a producer of guest performances of Croatian plays during its fifteen years of presence in New York. It has gradually built its own international festival, curatorial position and partnership relations with institutions such as La MaMa and NYU Skirball. That is why this year’s edition has a significance that goes beyond three performances. This is a rare example in which an organization of Croatian independent culture does not come to New York just as a guest, but has been creating its own international program there for years, bringing together Croatian and international artists and participating in shaping the city’s cultural offer.<\/p>\n

At a time when the space for independent, experimental and queer art is narrowing again in many parts of the world, the return of Queer New York to La MaMa reminds us of something broader: the international visibility of Croatian culture is not only created through large institutions and one-off representative guest appearances. A more systematic visibility of this type is possible only because of the long-term work of the independent scene, relationships that have been built for many years and ideas that can find their place from Zagreb in one of the most competitive cultural cities in the world.<\/p>\n
