There is no word for nature.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are works that arise from the desire to add something to the world, and those that arise from the need to take something away, strip it, bare it, until only the most essential remains: the body and the space that receives it. The series There is no word for nature<\/em> undoubtedly belongs to this second, ascetic type. In it, undressing is not exhausted as a gesture of provocation or as a mere liberation from convention. It is an act of trust, exposing one’s own vulnerability to the gaze of a landscape that, unlike the human eye, does not judge.<\/p>\n

The nude in the landscape has, of course, a long and not always innocent history. From Arcadian idylls to bathers that painting has placed in the greenery for centuries as a decorative addition to nature, the body in the landscape has most often been the object of someone else’s gaze, a motif among motifs. Here, this relationship is quietly but decisively reversed. The auto-nude abolishes the distance between the one who looks and the one who is looked at: the author and the subject merge into a single figure, in a solitude that is not solitude but concentration. The photographic act becomes almost a meditative exercise, a kind of memento mori<\/em> performed not through symbols of transience, skulls and withered flowers, but through the living body itself, aware of its own expiration date.<\/p>\n

It is precisely in this awareness of fragility that what we might call two-way communication opens up. The body no longer stands in opposition to nature, as its observer, master or interpreter. It joins it as a similar, equally transient part. Tree bark, stone, grass and skin do not differ in essence, but only in duration. What in another context would be an anxious realization of one’s own finitude, here becomes a source of unexpected serenity: to accept oneself as a mortal being means finally to belong to the world.<\/p>\n

The title of the series subtly but precisely emphasizes this. The concept of nature as a separate entity is almost exclusively present in the Western context. Starting from the Latin word natura<\/em> , derived from the verb nasci<\/em> , to be born, it has built over the centuries the concept of nature as that which stands across from us. The paradox is worth noting: a word that has birth in its root has become a sign of distance.<\/p>\n

There is no word for nature<\/em> attempts to bridge that distance without words, using the body itself and, in doing so, using the language of images to restore what has been lost in words: the experience of belonging that needs no name because it does not need to be explained.<\/p>\n

[BIO]\n

Ivan \u0110ukez was born in Zagreb in 1999. He completed elementary music school, language high school, and the Design Studio, as well as three semester-long schools of photography and film, and participated in several speculative design residencies of the Metamedij association in Pula. He is a co-founder, photographer, and designer of the gallery and association Suputnici, which has been supporting young beginnings and experiments in multi- and interdisciplinary artistic media since 2024.<\/p>\n

His interests include music and sound art, writing, graphic design, and contemporary art photography. He believes that true art is created in community, through unpretentious action, respect for diversity, and fostering inclusiveness, and this principle guides his work. In his artwork, he explores the relationship between man and nature through a physical, performative encounter full of respect, with a dose of humor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
