VLASTA DELIMAR (1956, Zagreb) is the most significant Croatian performance artist, uncompromising in her critique of the ideologies she has explored throughout her artistic career, which began in the late 1970s. She received the Seven Secretaries of SKOJ Award in 1986, and from 2005 to 2015 she served as the director of the artistic organization “Moja zemlja, Štaglinec” and its international performance festival held in Štaglinec near Koprivnica. She is a member of the Croatian Association of Visual Artists (HDLU). Delimar is one of the key figures who shaped contemporary performance art through the lens of the body as both medium and content — specifically the female, naked body, which continues to be a point of controversy even today. In her artistic practice, she explores femininity, gender relations, and the stages of the life cycle — from youth and desire, through partnership and motherhood, to aging. She brings autobiographical narratives into public space, questioning the boundaries between the public and private spheres and the norms of identity politics. She emphasizes that she does not support identification with, or belonging to, any ideology, religion, political party, or state, and that she advocates for human rights, individual freedom, respect for diversity, and ecological awareness.
