Night 1: Ya salem, what a world
While smoking his shisha in a qahwa or coffee house in Cairo, Egyptian Dutch journalist and storyteller Mounir Samuel will take you on a tour to the hidden queer world of North Africa and West Asia (the Middle East). Through storytelling and music he reveals the – to many – unknown secrets of the Arab speaking world, from the real content of a teapot to the revolutionary power of el hob mamnoua or forbidden love. Back home in Amsterdam, Mounir Samuel is known for his provocative performances and improvisation theater that is both funny, moving, highly intimate and all based on true stories. His motto? “My life is stranger than fiction.” Laugh and cry while he peels layer after layer of the world as we know it, while challenging our preconceived notions and ideas of religion, politics and identities.
Mounir Samuel (1989) is an Egyptian Dutch multidisciplinary artist, renowned journalist, author, documentary filmmaker, museum curator and cultural entrepreneur working on the cutting edge of climate, politics, media, culture, art, language, gender, religion and geography.
