Monika Miloševski
and the dialogue kept intertwining, again and again
Reflecting on the “tangibility of the invisible” within the everyday environment that inevitably surrounds her, artist Monika Miloševski develops a need to record what remains beyond direct visual perception. Her work stems from a personal examination of the relationship with the invisible in the space she inhabits.
After her grandfather’s death, the wind becomes an intuitive channel of communication for Miloševski – a symbol of a presence that transcends the physical. Windy days take on a personal meaning for her, transforming into spaces of encounter, comfort and signs. In this work, the artist explores the possibility of documenting the wind as an invisible but present force, using hair as a medium in this dialogue.
Hair, as an extension of the body, takes on both a personal and sensory character in her work – it is mobile, sensitive to air currents and reacts to its strength, thus achieving direct contact with the phenomenon that the artist connects with the memory of her grandfather.
In order to record this interaction, Miloševski uses a camera obscura inside which is placed photographic paper. The process of taking a photograph takes place in such a way that, at the moment when the wind blows, the artist comes out of the closed space and places the opening of the camera obscura in contact with the hair. The hair, moving under the influence of the wind, partially covers and reveals the opening of the camera, affecting the light exposure. Each such exposure lasts one minute, and the resulting photographs represent visual records of this dialogue between the hair and the wind. The resulting photographs are negatives.
These works record dynamic, abstract traces of air movement, visualizing the presence of wind through its interaction with the body. Through this project, Monika Miloševski explores the relationship between the physical and the immaterial, the sensory and the invisible, while simultaneously questioning the possibility of documenting that which is by its nature intangible.
