“Brand or, in English usage, brand (from Old Frisian meaning ‘to mark with a hot iron’ or to brand animals) is a recognizable sign or name of a product, which often also implies quality,” says Wikipedia. Over the past 35 years, Croatia has produced only one strong and consistently recognizable brand that inspires “feelings of trust, usefulness, well-being, and security”—of course, the Croatian Democratic Union.
By nature, a brand does not tolerate competition and seeks absolute dominance in its field. The Croatian Democratic Union, a political party that inherits the best of both revolutionary movements and mafia organizations, persistently attempts to occupy the entire field not only of social life but of life as a whole. Since it interprets competition as hostility, it seeks either to brand everything as its own property or to destroy it.
If, according to Jean-Noël Kapferer, a brand is not a product but the essence of the product, which thereby becomes a metaphysical category, then the essence of what the Croatian Democratic Union produces—and what could stand as its synonym—is emptiness.
