The ballroom culture was founded in New York City in the 60s and 70s by and for the African American and Latin American trans, drag, and generally LGBTQIA+ community. The culture was created out of a protest against the already existing drag balls, where white drag queens would often be favored. Queer Blacks and Latinos evolved the ballroom competitions into a community, into an escape from reality where they could be safe and be whoever they want to be. The ballroom served primarily as a space for empowerment and a survival mechanism to create visibility for marginalised groups who are still affected by racism, homophobia and transphobia on a daily basis.
The Queer Icons Kiki Ball is a celebration of queer (especially BIPOC) icons and pioneers in various fields: activists and key figures of the LGBTQIA+ community that advocated for equal rights of marginalized and stigmatized groups, artists who shaped the pop culture, as well as athletes who were brave to come out as members of LGBTQIA+ community. We celebrate the people who have changed the world in their own way and made it better for us.
The ball is organized by Boris 007 in collaboration with Domino, and it takes place during Queer Zagreb festival, only 3 days after IDAHOBIT – International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
